Nabakalebar Poem by Bharati Nayak

Nabakalebar

Rating: 4.8

The Soul of all souls
Oh Supreme
You are present
In me and all
You take your Avatars
To let us feel
That you are present
One amongst us
As any living being
You go through
All pleasure and pains
From birth to death
From morning till night
When time comes for sleep
You go into slumber
And wake up In the next morning
A' Yuga 'turns its leaf
To see YOU
IN YOUR NEW BIRTH

I enjoyed the experience of the ritual in your poem. You don't intellectualize it or try to explain it. You rather put the reader inside the devotee as she performs the ritual so that we experience the meeting of human and divine on the common ground of the temple. I like what Avik Datta Gupta wrote about the ritual as revealed by your poem, namely, God changes our souls in a parallel to our changing the statue's attire. It is a simple gesture but with profound spiritual importance.
