My Neighbors Are Not Red Or Blue Poem by Edmund V. Strolis

My Neighbors Are Not Red Or Blue

Rating: 5.0

Scatter birdseed like wishes
Spread good thoughts all around
Some will sprout into reality

Don't judge your neighbors too rashly
If she is red or the gentleman is blue
We must heed the principles of sweet liberty

Silence our overactive critical minds
Cultivate your thoughts outside the noise
Or be lost to your own smug certainty

Stop and dismiss the lunatic fringe
She is not them and they are not him
We are all ambassadors for humanity

Information swirls now in cyclone clouds
Saturated airwaves of endless sound
Our kind deserves more than generalities

Fellow citizen extend a helping hand
None of us have a line to the white house
Shine your spotlight now on our similarities

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I have some traditional beliefs and am open to any common sense approach to any change that gains positive results and is for the greater good in results and not just theory.Too many voices other than our own sometimes interfere with our own sound reasoning. Trust yourself.

We get better one by one, as free thinking individuals, we get lost when we dilute our own message by believing our side is right and there side is always wrong. I choose people over parties.

A message of positivity n goodwill. Some really amazing imagery to make the message more effective.

This is a really powerful poem Edmund. I am going to share this one. This is a message to be heard loud and clear. On top of it all, though, your writing here is terrific. I'm saving this one.

Really terrific poem, with a simple, honest message to which all should be able to relate. I like the rhyme-scheme- -it works well. I admire the way you managed to create this without it sounding preachy, or sermon-like.

Thank you Brian, we really must try and cultivate our own thoughts away from the noise. One thing my father did when I was an 18 year old know-it-all was to always question my sources of information. My thoughts had so be reasoned and not parroted. Where did you hear that? How do you know that is true? He insisted that my opinions like a well written book must be sourced and not some bumper sticker mentality.

Your thoughts are true, Edmund, but many people have been let down by the education system and don't know how to think critically. Yes, they are too easily influenced by the passionate words that fly from the left and right, and depending on demographics, they are often influenced from birth as to the side they favor. Debate is a cornerstone of growth but sides have become enemies, not participants in the same endeavor.

I have friends that are Trump, Cruz and Bernie supporters. They are highly intelligent and can tell you exactly why they support their man. They are also very hard working and giving individuals and do not fit neatly into any preconceived notion of being socialists or flag waving dunderheads. We are all guilty of stereotyping by propaganda and soon we believe them all to be indiscernible from the lunatic fringe when nothing could be further from the truth. That is why I wrote this little poem to remind ourselves to be careful with our sweeping prejudices.

Ι worship all these values in my whole life.I like seeing them in your poem, dear Edmund.

You have those values because you are right there at the well spring of liberty, the Greek City states, the cradle and teacher of philosophy. I am glad to report that rather than being buried in the customary snow we are here having weather that must rival the best Greek days!
