My Heart Was Young Poem by Juan Olivarez

My Heart Was Young

My heart was young just once,
And never was again.
And it had learned to grieve, and laugh,
And knew of sunshine and of rain.

My heart was wild and free,
And cared nothing for love.
And being so young it could not see,
What human dreams were of.

But my heart grew older, and was inclined,
To find a radiant soul.
And it set out on a quest to find,
A heart of solid gold.

Through many weary miles my heart,
Searched for but could not find.
That one necessary essential part,
That to my aging heart would bind.

And when at last my heart resigned,
To lead a life apart.
Most unexpectedly did find,
A kind and loving heart.

My heart was young just once,
But now feels young once more.
Since it found what it was looking for,
The day you walked through my door.
