Murder By Numbers Poem by ER Bron Chiong, RSW

Murder By Numbers

An unarmed man fights against
the assailant with a knife at noon
in a government-run housing project
as we witnessed the on-going struggle
about twenty meters away from the scene
with the basketball court in between us
amidst the noisy merriment of the town feast

One, two, three stabs on the chest
four, five and six as he turns his back
and he fled to a nearby gate for help
but the killer got him cornered as he
fell down dead with the seven fatal blows
the killer walked freely with the weapon
while he passed the police detachment

Had the opportunity to ask later
the police chief about the incident
and the man with the bloodied weapon
was left untouched by the authorities
the plain answer was simply this—
there was no filed complain received
by the authorities concerned that time

Can a dead man file a complaint
on his behalf as the death was reported
another statistic in the police desk
of unsolved crimes in the urban vicinity
or what can be done to help prevent
another mysterious murder by numbers
in the midst of today's city in our world

Every man's life matter most
to God who made us in his image
be it black, brown, red, yellow or white
He loves us so much unconditionally
whether good or bad He does mind
by sending His only Son to the cross
to die for your and my sins to bear
