Mourning Dove Two Poem by William Waterway

Mourning Dove Two

Through winter’s air
they visit on wing
my heated birdbath
They drink
warm water
some times
they bathe
Before dawn
to
after dark
they sing
song upon song
All kinds of birds
all kinds of colors

One snowy
day
a dove came to visit
After enjoying a drink
it rested beneath
a white pine
my hands planted
15 years past
As snowflakes swirled
the dove walked further
beneath the pine’s protection
With binoculars
I watched
The dove nestle down
into strewn
detritus brown
With tiny beak
it pulled
one by one
needles and leaves
up against its body
Safe and warm
in home of the moment
the dove closed its eyes
I watched the dove sleep
as I thought
Of birds safely at rest
in forest deep
Until frightened to flight
by loud
intrusion
of
human
