Mister Poem by Win Gray

Mister

I met a man by the lake
He smelt like rum and cake
He walked over to me and introduced himself as Mister
I surmised he was a drifter
because he was dressed like a loser
I shook his hand just to be polite
and smiled like a lady should
He complimented my day’s attire
and revealed to me that I am the lady that he had long admire
“How true are those words you have spoken, mister? ”
“As true as my name is Mister,
my eyes have studied you my dear
who walk like a princes on ice,
who flutter like a butterfly in a rose garden during spring time
A lady so fair is at the heart of a man’s desire;
I had to come and whisper hello.”

I felt a sting in my heart
and a tremor in my knees
The rhythm of my drumming heart invited me to be his mistress
Charming mister, please take me home with you tonight
and never let me out of your sight
No truer and stronger a man I have met
I will make you a bet
that I will give you no stress
You’ve charmed me a maiden in distress
who had rejected her countrymen’s attempt to woo
with their unflattering proposal, hoping I’d say I do
to marriage and a promised blissful life,
for none of whom I wanted to be called wife
But you Mister, I see your soul
so clear and pure
I hear wedding bells toll
On a summer’s eve in June
we’ll sing a lovers tune
in merriment of our loving future
to be built in paradise of hardship and success
where we’ll build our fortress
and rule in the land of love
