'Maria' Poem by Joyce Hemsley

'Maria'

Oh, how madly in love they fell
In springtime, before they were wed.
But fate soon dismantled all passion
When green lights changed to bright red...
And he said:

'I wish I had read the signs sooner,
I wish I had been more aware,
The sight of Maria with another
Was heart-rending and so hard to bear.
Her fingers were adorned with his diamonds
And he kissed her soft golden hair.
He wooed my Maria with love songs
And he was handsome as she was fair!
Friends say there will be a new Eden
But 'first love' we shared was so dear.
If their sudden affair passes with time
Then I will be waiting here.'

Oh Yes, he will be:
Waiting for his lovely Maria,
His beautiful dancing queen;
And he will buy a ticket to Heaven
When red lights turn back to green.
