Love Unrequited Poem by Jake Harris

Love Unrequited

Rating: 5.0

Hours to days
Days to weeks
What value has time
Near the heart I seek

Journeys Long
And journeys short
My perfect girl
My only thought

She's in my heart
And in my mind
She's in my dreams
The pleasant kind

My heart and soul
And love for her
Alas for me
A horrid cur

The only man
She does not need
My rough hewn face
And zealous creed

To win her back
My only task
But loving me
Is too much to ask

A friend is all
I'll ever be
A lonesome life
For me to lead

My soul destroyed
Emotions rent
My heart now broken
A failed attempt

And in the depths
Of malted wine
I drown my tears
And pass the time

And in the late
Years of my life
Without a child
Without a wife

I find a picture
Of her face
And in my chest
My heart does race

I feel the joy
That passed me by
Come back to me
And so I cry

And as I lay
Awake that night
And let my broken
Soul take flight

I close my eyes
And slowly die
And let out one
Last final sigh

And to the picture
I whisper true
'All my life,
I loved only you'
