Love Like A Locket Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Love Like A Locket

Love should never be a prison.
A heart cannot be caged.
Try and it will shape-shift into a snake and slip between the bars,
Slither to the floor, slide between your sheets and strike like Cleopatra’s asp.
A heart must be charmed like a cobra.
Play the right melody and she will dance for you.

Love is like a locket: two souls clasping each other in a perfect fit.
The hold must be mutual.
The fit may be perfect, but screws do come loose.
Careful maintenance is required.
But well-kept, love can be a treasure.
It can sit on your breastbone, a pleasant load,
Pressing down on your heart with the reassurance of its presence.

As tiny as it is, that locket can hold the universe.
For in the perfect merger of two souls infinity abounds.
All becomes possible.
“Nothing” disappears.

True love is a private act,
Meant to be pressed between two halves of a heart
Like a lock of hair.
But the truest should be displayed from time to time,
Like a Georgian miniature
Or an intimate inscription.

There is freedom in a key.
Whether it is the kind that opens locks,
Or the kind that breaks codes,
Or the kind that harmonizes a symphony,
Each of us, in perfect partnership with another soul,
Can be the storehouse of the key to the kingdom.

We must protect it with our hearts and souls.
But we must be willing to present it to the worthy.

The true love of two melded souls can open the way for others to follow!
