Locked Away Poem by Jenny Williams

Locked Away

We lock the pieces of our heart into a box of gold.
A treasury kept safe from the reaches of the world.
We put inside our hopes and dreams, our passions, our desires.
We put them there to keep them safe, to hide them from the light.

No hand can touch, no eye behold the mysteries contained
Inside the box where everything in secret doth remain.
Guarded by the dark, safely tucked away by night
Our hopes, our dreams and yearnings all asleep and cannot wake.

But what if we take the key and open up the lock,
With air to breathe, sunshine to see, we let out our heart.
Now hurtful words can penetrate, disappointments can break,
Spite, abuse and failure all have their toll to take.

But now this heart is free to love, to give and to have joy.
It is not bound away to merely sit there and grow cold.
The morning sun can warm this heart, with energy it glows.
It’s passions, fears, desires, hopes, now show themselves so bold.

This heart has purpose and even though it can be bruised and break,
The joy, the hope, the peace and love should not be kept locked away.
