Let The Past Be The Past Poem by rebecca hyer

Let The Past Be The Past

I have been hurt
men treated me like dirt
i was cheated on, used
lied to and abused

but i know my past is my past
i look for something that will last
the future is what i see
this is how it has to be

with everything that has happened to me
you would think that love would make me flee
but i will tell you a secret
if i live in the past, my future will be nothing but regret

you say tell me more i dont understand
so i look at you and tell you to take my hand
if the future is not what i can see
all of the bad in my past will swallow me

if i mark you down as the rest
ill never know if you are the best
if i penalize you for all they have done
it would be your love that id shun

if i did this happiness would be unknown
my heart would never find a home
if i lived in my past, i would be afraid of you
then id never know if our love could be true
