Jimmy Poem by heather sweeting

Jimmy

The empty grave was newly dug, the spade still standing there,
Then a little girl stepped forward to read a solemn prayer.
The sense of loss was tangible as the little coffin was borne
by many hands along the path to where friends had gathered to mourn.
Jimmy had come to say goodbye to Doug, his most trusted friend.
Doug had been both loyal and true, standing by him to the end.
Who now would share his worries and fears, whence now his consolation?
To whom would he tell his good ideas and show his latest invention?
One hand on the coffin he bade Doug farewell, wiping a tear from his eye.
Some day, maybe they would meet again in the garden in the sky?
Jimmy’s mother came over to comfort him and sat him on her knee,
‘It’s no good taking on so lad, whatever will be will be,
Now hurry and bury that blessed slug and then come in for your tea! ’
