If I Told You Poem by Amy Serhienko

If I Told You

Rating: 5.0

If I said that you were the one -
the one I see behind the face in my dreams;
the one whose soul calls out to mine;
the one to whom I'm bound without choice;
the one I can't escape;
what would you say?

You would tell me that it can't be.
You would say that we belong to others.
You would say that I should forget you exist.
But I can do none of those things.

We have spent our eternal lives together,
and while the once-born cannot understand,
I know that you can feel the bond we share;
the silken cord that keeps me tethered to you
from one incarnation to the next.

That cord has stretched across lifetimes,
and cannot be broken by mortal laws and boundaries.
And I smile, because if we are not meant to live this life together,
we will make up for it the next time around.
