They said -
‘I need not follow them;
Whatever they knew they had taught,
They had no more to give,
I need not waste my time.'
I paid no heed.
They were my old teachers
Who had opened up my mind
And I never wanted to lose them:
No one else would guide me the way they did.
But lose them I did,
I outgrew their utility.
Lest I forgot them, quite often
I leaf through some of the notes
They made me take down,
I see them move in those words
Their serious looks are intact.
