I Remember When I Felt The Same. Poem by Anisha Nyambe

I Remember When I Felt The Same.

I remember when I felt the same
used and abused; thrown and reused
and people perceive you want the fame.

You feel like an Instagram user everyone has used;
you were always the solution applied like a priceless body lotion.

We all make mistakes yet we still choose to use ink
and questions on your freedom seemed like a debate with no motion
so, they only give you five seconds to think.

I once felt the same, I can remember
and I'm still crying breathlessly in my bed.
I've wanted a new year the day after 31st December.
They can see us but act as though we're dead.

Then you forgot how to smile
and the users are asking for your will.
You're standing there all the while:
you have asked for nothing but you're paying the bill.

I remember when I felt the same.
O! the poor pen, I've used all its ink.

Your fair choices are a losing game
yet still, there might be something different over the brink.

I remember when I felt the same…
