I Long For Winter's Snow Poem by Jesse Kloos

I Long For Winter's Snow

Rating: 5.0

There was a time I longed for Spring-
To see the blue above
And hear the yellow warbler sing
Of everlasting love.
But all I heard were doves that mourn,
A doleful dirge- depressed, forlorn-
For time or chance had from them torn
Away their one true love.

So then I longed for Summer rains-
To feel the heavens spout
Life-giving waters on the plains
And watch the harvest sprout.
But all I felt was scorching heat
On desert sands beneath my feet
And there's no yield of maize or wheat
Amidst unyielding drought.

I yearned to smell the wind that blows
The Autumn's golden leaves-
A greater spice than every rose
Amassed in massive sheaves.
But all I smelled was death's decay
For every yearning can't defray
What lack of Sun can take away,
For lengthened nights are thieves.

Now all I want is ice and cold
To freeze the world and bring
Reprieve from mourning, drought, and mold
And numb the suffering.
If mourning doves will never know
The warbler's splendid song of loe
Then how I wish for Winter's snow
To cover everything.

And then Spring...

wow, jesse, overall I'm impressed with this poem as well- a skillful piece i expect many of us can relate to (and therefore with universal appeal) . loe, eh? i had to look it up. what I've read of you so far does have a pleasant old fashioned feel, but i don't know about resorting to scots here to make a rhyme... something to think about. -glen kappy

Hello Jesse. It seems you are no longer active on Poemhunter. I remembered your Little Thrush and decided to come look at some more of your work. This one is also so well- written. Not many poets on this site who pay such attention to form. I'm wondering if there is snow now where you live and how you feel about it.

I love all types of poetry and prose- but I have a special fondness for classical poetry and enjoy writing with form and meter in mind.

Greetings Laurie. I do stop by on occasion. Unfortunately, I just don't get much time to write. Thank you for your kind words! We do not have snow. It's been a very warm winter for us. I normally love snow but after a few months of it am ready for spring. ;)
