I Am A Poem Poem by Kelsey Gallant

I Am A Poem

I am a poem.
I wish I were a story.
Stories are interesting, with their long narratives and
characters and plot.
I am boring.
I am a poem.
I am a poem.

I wish I were a song.
Songs are beautiful, with their melody and lyrics flowing
together like a converging river.
I am plain.
I am a poem.
I am a poem.

I wish I were an essay.
Essays are meaningful, with their carefully thought-out
paragraphs, saying just enough but not too much.
I am pointless.
I am a poem.
I am a poem.

I wish I were a play.
Plays are incredible, with their costumes and scenery and
dramatic portrayal.
I am dull.
I am a poem.

“But a poem is a world.
A poem has a point, a poem has a plot.
A poem is beautiful and incredible, it can say as much or as
little as it chooses.
Poems are not boring or plain or pointless or dull.
A poem is a world.”

I am a poem.
I am happy to be a poem.
Poems are interesting, beautiful, meaningful, and incredible,
all at the same time.
I am a world.
I am a poem.
