Human Face: The Mask Poem by Karen Jane

Human Face: The Mask

Once upon a time
God created two creatures
Man and Woman and settled ‘em,
In the Garden of Eden. (I)

God made Man
from the dust,
And breathed into him
The breath of life. (II)

And Woman He made out of ribs
Taken from Man's sides when asleep
Thus came into being a Woman
For She was made of the stuff taken from Man's frame. (III)

Today Man looks multifacet: Wearing ‘A Mask'
Forged with maliciousness
Armed with weapons
Attired in the robes of hypocrisy -
He is now possessed with fear. (IV)

Fear! Fear of what kind?
Fear of caste and creed
Fear of poverty and disease
Groaning under the grindstones of oppression. (V)

We all pray to God,
A God with different names:
Allah, Ram, Christ -
All variants of the name of one nameless. (VI)

Now, Bonds of Love are broken
And violence rules our lives
Enthroned in our hearts is Satan,
Spreading His venomous fangs. (VII)

There is a Loss Of Faith
Skepticism, Sin and Self prevails
Stones on the shore bed churn
Foretelling our future as Death Bed. (VIII)

We wait and wait forlorn
For twilight to show us the path,
And dispel all gloom around us
With a bright glow of phosphorescence. (IX)
