Hippocampus Poem by Kimberly Burnham

Hippocampus

The messenger rides on a horse
tells secret memories
shouting, screaming, tenderly whispering
sometimes silently pausing
bring to light stories and myths
a sea horse
Greek hippo horse
kampos sea monster
reflects the shape of the brain's
memory keeper
the seat of memories from 50 years ago
or only two days

Visualize the messenger
riding on a horse
this is what I want you to know
to hear …
I remember when …
or the last time I …
my first …
memory is this …
