Hearts Poem by Tamika Robinson

Hearts

Subsided pain
Always comes back
Now and again

I see that now
Time and time again
People come
People go
Some cause joy
Some cause woe
But
Have they stopped to think of the people they encounter?

Who and what they are?
Are they not conscious of the world around them?
Do they not emphasize with the people who are not always happy?
So they care?
I don't think so.

Hearts break
Hearts repair
And then they break again.
Wouldn't it just make sense to leave them broken?

My heart is stitched together
The stitches overlap
From all the times it broke
From all the times I had to take the needle and thread
And stitch it back together again.

I always thought
What if I just didn't put the pieces back together?
What if I just let the shards lay on the floor
A life-long reminder
Of that one
The one who hurt me.
