Hate Is Such A Strong Word (Which Is Why I'M Using It) Poem by Ema Nekaf

Hate Is Such A Strong Word (Which Is Why I'M Using It)

I used to love you.
But that is past tense.
You loved her
In the most literal sense.

She wasn’t interested
But still you pursued.
It continued for months.
Finally, you subdued.

Now was my chance.
You would finally be mine.
We started to date.
It was all going fine.

But she missed the attention
And came up with a plan
She begged and she pleaded
For you to be her man.

You left without explanation.
Without a call or word.
I thought it was going well.
I was devastated when I heard.

You two became the perfect couple.
I tried to remain your friend.
But her selfish need for attention
Brought that friendship to an end.

Months passed like the wind.
Winter came and went.
Summer came as quickly
As the time we, together, spent.

When you called, my heartbreak
Was just a distant memory.
We were ecstatic to be with each other
Like it was always meant to be.

As time went by you confessed
The feelings you had for me.
I felt confident and beautiful
Finally! You loved me more than she!

But things were not as they appeared
You used me, and now my name is dirt.
That’s not how I imagined it would be.
Now I feel stupid and abandoned and hurt.

I used to love you.
But that is past tense.
I HATE you.
In the most literal sense.
