Hard to wait when you don't know what you're waiting for
Hard to hang on when there's nothing to hold
Hard to see when all around you is darkness
Hard to hear what you've never been told

Hard to know love when you've never had it
Hard to feel young when you're already old
Hard to stay strong when you're at your weakest
Hard to be timid when you want to be bold

Hard to laugh when nothing is funny
Hard to be tempted when you can't be cajoled
Hard to have faith when there's nothing to believe in
Hard to stay warm when the world's so cold

Hard to play the game when you don't know the rules
Hard to bet your hand when you know you should fold
Hard to be alone when you're already lonely
Hard to stop crying when you can't be consoled
