Great River Niger Poem by Kingsley Egbukole

Great River Niger

Rating: 5.0

Born of Fouta Djallon Plateau
Native of Guinea
Meanders interior of Sahara
The great desert traversed
Loops southward
To gulf of Guinea
2,600 miles journey
In motion peristaltic.

Navigating Niger
Rumbles in peace
Through serene black nights
Heat of African sun
Course, product of forerunners
Djoliba and Quorra
In tireless trek.

North East guinea
To Bamako, Mali
Niamey, Niger
To Jebba, Nigeria
Smiling on nations
Unifying distinct tribes
A drink of oath
Testifying brotherhood
Of black Africa.

250 miles from gulf of Guinea
Unites with Benue
Num, Forcados and Escravos
Forked appendages
Merges the seas
In great maritime delta.

The black Niger, beautiful
Bride of African pride
I ruminate in awe
Your majesty revered
Mystery to foreigners
Blessing to acquaintances
The plants drink, rejoice
Blood of animals you flow
Generous Niger
Sustainer of life.

Niger, humble boet
How mighty
Yet calm and humane
The whale finds dominion
Gods a kingdom
In peaceful coexistence
Uncomplaining you remain
Ever flowing and gleaming
In obedience to nature
Great Niger, our Niger
I salute you.

Kingsley, this poem transcends the heavens of imagination and beauty. A great honor to a river rich with tales of generations spanning to antiquity. Good job brother.
