Goodbye To This Town Poem by Francis Duggan

Goodbye To This Town

Goodbye to this town i am leaving but i will be back here next Spring
For to greet the wildflowers of September and hear the birds whistle and sing
In the parkland, gardens and on the street trees all day long till the sun goes down
Tis goodbye for now but not forever to this beautiful old Country-town.

Goodbye to this town i am leaving tomorrow from here i will be far away
And though the people here are quite friendly here i am not destined to stay
But i will return in September when the fruit trees wear blossoms of white
And when people are in their beds sleeping the magpies sing in the moonlight.

Goodbye to this Town for the present though tis a place i could settle in
Here i could buy a house and live happy if i had a big tattslotto win
But at the moment i feel quite unsettled and the wanderlust is in my soul
The urge that is in me to travel is an urge that i cannot control.

Goodbye to this town i am leaving though good bye is a hard thing to say
I hope to return in September when the nesting birds sing all the day
When the fruit trees are laden with blossoms and the Town Park is looking more green
But the memories i will carry with me of the beauty around here I've seen.
