God Save The Children Poem by Gillian Commerford

God Save The Children

God help the children of this land
the abused
battered
beaten
molested
raped
murdered.
I see them daily
in the newspapers
on my TV screen
innocent faces and pure
stained by the sins of their elders-
This is not what life promised them.

Cover their faces
place their tiny bodies
in tiny coffins
bury them in miniature graves
while their mothers weep.

We should all be weeping-
I blame not only their abusers
the ones who beat them
molested them
raped them
murdered them-
I blame us all.

A country that cannot look after its children
has no right to call itself free.

God save the children
God save us all.
