Global Warning Poem by Tom Billsborough

Global Warning

Can we deselect stupidity?
Coral blanches in the warming seas,
The Arctic cap recedes,
And indifference breeds
An expanding waist of greed.
This is no Greek tragedy.
This is not great Sophocles,
Not Oedipus destroying Mother Earth.
That was accidental. This far worse
As the white faced clown
Is chosen from the chorus,
Merely an Apprentice,
Plucked for the task,
By the call of avarice.

Tragedy indeed. The siren call of money has deafened the ears of the wealthy and powerful to the growing signs of catastrophe. I read once that once the effects of global warning have reached a certain point, it won't matter if the rich and powerful gasp in surprise and now believe- it will be irreversible no matter how much money and how much power they fling at it. So the world appears to be doomed if the governments continue this course they are on. Well-written elegy, my friend.

I must say I fear for the future of our planet. The inertia of governments is still alarming despite Kyoto. Here on the North West Coast of England we have had a succession of mild winters and no snow at all. When I was young we used to build igloos and snow forts. Flooding has become far more frequent. There is a tipping point as you say so we need to act now.
