Girlfriends Poem by Sally Plumb Plumb

Girlfriends

She looked at me,
then looked ahead
into a mirror,
and the she said,
"you are beautiful"
preening herself.

From then on after,
in my head, I was ugly,
and fought instead
the impediment
I thought was mine,
and coloured my hair
with style and flair,
painted my lips,
swung my hips,
designed my clothes,
but.... then she chose
a wealthy man
who extended her plan
for beauty,
still leaving me the duty
of being the beast.

So, I write, wounded,
to X -plain.
