Gaza – Land Of The Philistines Poem by Chris Lane

Gaza – Land Of The Philistines

One and one half million Palestinians
Appear as if they are living
In an open air prison
On the Gaza Strip

Having resisted annexation
Viewing it as colonialism
They survive as captives
Imprisoned within their homeland

Should they leave by ship
Given half a chance
On Gaza's Mediterranean coastline
Rescue craft could land

Or perhaps in orderly procession
Through the desert walk
To a desert oasis, once there
They could make a new start

Isolated and besieged
Fearfully the Philistines fish
Their drinking water in short supply
Reduced to a drip

Not a page from history
This occurrence in our century

The Philistines appear in Egyptian sources in the twelfth century BC. AD, and are presented as enemies of Egypt from the north, mixed with other hostile peoples collectively known (to the) ancient Egyptians as the Sea People.
After their confrontation with the Egyptians, the Philistines were fixed on the coastal strip of south-west of the land of Canaan, that is to say, in a region centered on the current Gaza Strip.
Their cities have dominated the region until the Assyrian conquest of Tiglath-pileser III in -732. They are then subjected to regional empires, and it seems to be gradually assimilated. The latest entries are from the Philistines of the second century BC. AD, in the first of the Books of Maccabees [1].
The language of the Philistines is unknown, since there are no known textual production. It is possible that this is originally an Indo-European language, but the evidence is tenuous.
