For You And I Poem by Michael P. Johnson

For You And I

I walked the earth like you my friend
I lived for self and gain
Until I saw this life would end
And I’d have lived in vain

What could I do what could I say?
What was this life then for?
If I to God would kneel and pray
Would truth lay wide its door?

I did it then I did it there
With heart still full of doubt
I asked if I could also share
The life I’d heard about

I waited there a little while
Then just a little more
When suddenly I felt the smile
When love began to pour

It poured it flowed my heart was filled
It soaked my very soul
It rained until my doubts were spilled
And Jesus made me whole

I don’t know how I don’t know why
Except the facts were plain
I learned if here, to self I’d die
I’d live to live again

I changed my mind I changed my ways
Repented sin and shame
With faith to spend eternal days
With Him who bore my shame

Christ did it all upon the tree
He did it all for love
Suffering death for you and me
That we should live above
