Food Chain And being Vegetarian. Poem by Nabakishore Dash

Plants absorb, through roots,
minerals and water,
their leaves accept
solar energy and carbon-di-oxide
from the atmosphere,
synthesize food for them and others.
So known as the producers,
the first level of the food chain,
prepare our grains to
assure our livelihood and
are the most important members.

The vegetarians are herbivorous,
energy from the producers
flow to them and
form the second level in food chain,
consumers of first order.
They only get ten percent energy,
the rest ninety percent gets dissipated, as heat, that
increases disorderliness
in the atmosphere.

The carnivores feed on
herbivores, become consumers
of the second order.
Get only ten percent energy from them,
the rest ninety percent
is dissipated, as usual as heat, to
the atmosphere.

Thus energy level
decreases gradually
as we go away
farther and farther from
producers to consumers
of different orders in food chain
up to the top carnivores
like lion and tiger.
Let us plant more trees,
be vegetarian to get enough energy,
remain healthy,
support many more consumers,
reduce food scarcity
in near future.
