First Breath After Coma Poem by Eduardo Torres

First Breath After Coma

I had butterflies in my stomach
the ball was coming towards me,
I made the catch,
as I caught the ball,
I saw horns,
as I got hit,
I heard noise,
I felt pain that left me goosebumps,
all over my skin,
my eyes were shut
but my ears were open,
All I could hear were voices,

I tried opening my eyes,
but I just couldn't
I heard the doctor say,
that I was in a coma

Two years passed,
my senior year was here,
I finally open my eyes,
I take the first breath
My family is relieved to see me,
friends have smiles on their faces,
I was happy to see everyone

I see someone else walk in,
She looked familiar,
could it really be her?
she had some guy with her,

I just thought to myself
that it could be her brother,
but it wasn't,
she came up to me,
tapped me on the shoulder,

I dared not to look at her,
but i did
When I looked at her eyes
Memories and tears hit me,
Flash backs were hitting me,
like no other,

She walked away with a smile on her
face,
while I just laid there with dismay,
I couldn't believe what I just saw,
I should of not woken up,

Weeks later I walk into school
I noticed how everyones changed,
I feel like the same person,
I was 2 years ago,

I walk up to the girl and the guy
I asked her,
What happened between us
she told me,
she couldn't wait,

That day I sat there waiting,
for my prayer to come true,
the night came,
the lights were on,
it was game time,

This was my first game,
since the coma,
my time comes,
the ball was coming towards me
I make the catch in the end zone,
while I receive cheers,
Tears of joy come pouring down my face,
I had the game winning catch,

Later on that night,
I receive a call,
it was her,

We talked for hours,
until the moon came down,
she told me she missed me,
I told her that I did to,
I took another breath,
The first breath after coma
did not lead to dilemma,

I'm just glad I am back on my feet,
with a heart pounding,
a new beginning awaiting for me,

The first breath after coma,
was a good choice.
