Fenced Poem by Diana van den Berg

Fenced

This freedom from violation
is a violation of freedom
enclosing the greenery.

Hide the freedom.
Hide the violation.
Hide the cost.
Paint it green,
heritage green.

(22 August 2005)

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I didn't want to fence my property as my garden is an indigenous forest and I didn't want to spoil the effect, but crime made it necessary. I would have preferred the ugly metal spars to have been painted heritage green, but that would have cost more.
