Farm Near Chicopee Poem by Edward Nudelman

Farm Near Chicopee

A dampness in the air.
Railroad tracks
entering a field.
A fence along the edge
of an old swamp.
Winterberry dotting
dreary landscape.
A cold sun lingers.
No chickens.
No heavy machinery.
Some birds squabbling
over an unearthed nut.
A pair of eyes
move up, then
over a fence.
A deer,
perhaps a fox.
Near a wall of maples,
a barn with a horse.
A house without
a garden or a lawn.
A door.
An upstairs room.
At the foot of the bed,
a lifeless body.
