Exile Poem by Jessica Millsaps

Exile

On a dark day
In a sad place
With a small girl
The exile in us all

You say you don't hide any emotion
Close to true,
But I cannot believe
When I know the reality

It is the exile in you
Refusing to show it's face
For the hatred you show to it
For the time you spent locking it away

The exile is simply there
Everyone has one
You, me, someone far away
The one emotion, they are too proud to show
Is their own little exile

Where do you hide yours?
Do you take care of it?
Are you gentle?
Or do you beat it away?
In a cold dark dank place?
For your little exile is a part of you
A part unable to return
A part that must be given to one who will be gentle

I know my little exile
Do you know yours?
