Energy Poem by Phil Lucas

Energy

If one deems to consider marvels,
think this numinous force
we call energy.
So touching in its silent grandeur,
invisible too,
like the yearning of a darling in dreams.

What harnessed, mesmeric power
we take unhesitating,
amplifying, animating the earth,
bringing light-unlocked to all.
For sure, our roam and toil and fancy free,
all is come from energy.

And how?
See first
the city’s bitter nightfall,
banished
by emerald street-lit skyline.
Watch too, illumination sorcery
as parish church becomes cathedral,
inn, the grandest hotel,
and cottage turns our palace.
Here, loved ones awoken
by rich, kettle-spun coffee
hurry soon to office, factory, shop, mine and warehouse.
What abundant industry we are granted
where talk of television and radio is brewing.

But soon, electric gossip ends,
and by shrill steel hooves
all are homeward bound.
Welcome to the warmth, like a garment worn,
and welcome fine nourishment.
Ah, the sweet homely smells from the steely oven.

But now, we hush,
for here’s the truth and plain;
a world’s new baby brought to bear
in hospitals bright and cradled,
full safe by our beauteous mystic
“Energy begets being, ” we whisper.
The essence of life.

How wondrous the grand comforter.
How driving of change and mind’s illumination.
Reflect awhile it’s noble arrangement;
a flip of a switch,
and the graceful glide of swans.
Come gaze beneath the water.

Energy.
For all that is good on this clean earth.
