Embrace Poem by Devin Lasker

Embrace

A child needs a mother
Not a father, sister, or brother,
Because a mother builds the soul,
They take a thousand pieces and make it whole.
They are with a hug when you are sad,
Or a strong word when you are bad,
But no matter what they do there is on clear factor
A mother doesn't have to be the one that gave birth to you

You see I've had plenty of mothers
Not one do I share blood with,
No scratched that
Because some of these some of these women have bleed for me.
These women have taken on the ultimate fee.
These women let a pillar known as me become part of their foundation
Knowing that a wrecking ball called separation could come at anytime
Not just wrecking their foundation, but also mine.

See I would come to rely on them
Like the moon relies on the sun
Reflecting the brilliance of its light
In hopes as shinning as bright,
But only having that light become something else.
As much as I wanted to be like them
There were things that separated us
See no one can be someone else
They can only be their own self

But like a star about to be born do I act
Taking in gases in the form of experiences
And condensing them in a being known as me
Until I combust with the ideals that I borrowed
And like a star do I shine,
Or try to shine
Because every star has a day were it doesn't shine as bright
Was it goes against its very nature.

I try to forget about my dark days
Days that my mothers would give more than a strong word to.
I want to be that person with open arms
Arms so big that Icarus would be jealous
Arms where anyone may find comfort
Arms that would match the feathered arms of my mothers,
Because to me those women were angels.
They didn't care for me out of responsibility,
They just cared
