Drum Sisters Poem by Chidi Okoye

Drum Sisters

Our heritage should live like tomorrow without end.
The fire of our past should not be allowed to die.
The baton of our heritage should be passed on despite the turbulent wind of time.
We are holding on to our drums like our warriors held on to their arrows and spears.
We are holding firm to the songs of mothers like African brides held on kegs of wine.

Drum sisters,
Drums of the land.
Joy of the weak and strong.
Rhythm of the roots.
We are sisters of the soil.
Our heritage should be preserved, and treasured as the soul of life.
We are sisters of the land willing to share our mothers songs for the joy of all.

Drum sisters,
Drums of the land.
Joy of the weak and strong.
Rhythm of the roots.
Lets jam and jump to the rhythm of the land to uplift the abandoned.
Lets sing and shake to the echoes of our drums to keep hope alive.
Lets wake up villages and cities with sacred songs for the healing of our land.
Lets vibrate sky high for the coming home of the lost souls.
Lets drum hard and holy to wake the sleeping hearts to a dance of change.
Lets sing and clap for rejuvenation of the abused and broken hearts.

Drum sisters,
Drums of the land.
Joy of the weak and strong.
Rhythm of the roots.
