Downfall Poem by Alejandro Torres

Downfall

I plotted the downfall of a tyrant
The sea swallowed me once
Selling the dream of nobility
With my bones
Washing upon shore
Like your tears
Falling on my fingertips
It would be so
If only you cried
But by the Gods
I never wanted your tears
Only buffoons and jesters
Search for fools gold
So I kept you close
As close as I kept the devil far
Though your past
Would rather have me gone for good
How great is the knowledge
Of the dumb
How grand was immortality
When our hands were wound together
And I plotted the downfall
Of my heart
But had I known
That my soul was also at stake
I would have sought the knowledge
Of philosophers of old
Poets of Hade’s realm
Would have been great for guidance
But plots are better left full
And slowly I fell
Just as my heart had many moons before
I could utter the words
I love you
