David Barrett Poem by Francis Duggan

David Barrett

No doubt a descendant of Eugene Barrett the Aubane Barretts a famous clan
A champion amateur boxer and a very successful young man
He is climbing up in the rankings in the sport of the fisticuff
And as a young Aubane Barrett he surely will be good enough

In boxing for to go much further and to know of far greater renown
Far from the quiet green valleys by Mushera near Millstreet Town
Who knows in the not too distant future of his further successes we may read
As in Duhallow now it does seem that a new sporting hero they need.

Fair dues to David Barrett a young man who is on the rise
To read of his many successes to me comes as no great surprise
His clan are the Aubane Barretts and they are known and famed far and wide
And they are spoken of far distant from their home in the Aubane Countryside.

In boxing he can go much further if he so yearns for renown
And as an Aubane Barrett he will be a hard one to knock down
And I know that he will keep on punching till the final bell it will ring
And that he will give us some more chances his praises for to write of and sing.

He is one of the Aubane Barretts of that need we say anymore
And in the annals of Duhallow we have heard of them often before
A descendant of the great one Eugene and he is one who should be good enough
And he is one who should not be found wanting even when the going it gets tough.
