Dark Path Poem by William Kofoed

Dark Path

In the cold darkness of the night
looking to black sky and the stars so bright
Reds and gold's and blues and whites
and bright shining moon high overhead

darkness is silent cold and hard
the heart lies empty of all desire
of the day the before us lies
wanting desperately to turn away

black hard road does straightly lie
going too quickly across the land
once again to where we would not be
of empty longing in another day

calling to me as sirens song
of another path the curves away
to travel to a happier place
of memories warm long before

my will is weak to temptations call
longing memories within me call
to the things from long ago
happier times long lost to me

hard is life and the needs there of
the pulls me away from where I would be
holding to the hard straight path
going on into the cold dark night
