Dark Angels And Ashes Poem by MaryLisa Russo

Dark Angels And Ashes

Rating: 5.0

There are no saints here
Only angels of twilight
Sitting around drunk
Tripping on unpunished sins
And unrequited love...

It was so easy
Spiralling downward
From heavenly grace
Surrounded by stardust
And liquid sunshine
Wings transitioning
From
Pristine white
To
Steel gray
To
Inky black
Crash landing
Like explosive lightening
Ripped from heaven's womb
Bruised
Broken
Blind
Temples hammering
Breathing choked
Teetering on the edge of insanity
As though a thousand claws
Are furiously scratching at your throat

And now here we are
Vagabond creatures amongst
These unsuspecting souls
No power left except
To read minds
And control thoughts-
A terrible punishment
For the human mind is always
Buzzing like bees
Startled from their hives
Electrified with endless thoughts
That drill a hole
Through peace and serenity

We were once royal in heaven
Played volleyball with the stars
Sipped ancient nectar from the silvery moon
Parted clouds with one breath
And flirted mercilessly with the scorching sun...
We danced our way
To reckless abandonment
Leaving streaks on heaven's
Diamond covered floors

But then it all came crashing
Humanity, that is...
World wars, crumbling governments,
Evil dictators, the downfall of the environment,
The earth as a whole...
It all lost it's footing
And we-
The shining stars in heaven
Got cast aside
Kicked out of our kingdom
Ordered to watch, to second guess
The last reminents of humanity
In an attempt to forestall further chaos

We now walk amongst humanity
Bitter and wild
Like rabid, hungry dogs
Our minds melted over
With painful memories
Of who we were
Once upon a time
When we played hide and seek
With majestic rainbows
And rode unicorns
In our lofty paradise

Those memories-
They keep trickling into the present like the last Few wine drops
From an ancient glass bottle
Searing into our brain
Mimicking the heavenly marks
Tattooed onto our saintly skin
Yet a further reminder of our
Angelic branding

Humanity looks upon us
And sees beauty
A beauty that blinds the eyes
And drops mortals to their knees
Pledging allegiance
To any false idol just to be able
To continue basking
In our heavenly glow

We had it all...
And now we have nothing
It was easy to fall from grace
From glittering heaven
To this earth we now know
As abandoned hell
Question is...
How hard is it to go
From hell back up to heaven?
I would risk burning
My weeping soul
To a blackened crisp
That turns to ashes
In the palm of a human hand
I tried once-
But that is another story...

Mary Lisa, I like this one. A whole lot. Talk about Imagery. Awesome. Every thing about this poem is perfect. Even that last line. Keeps one guessing. Congrats on yet another 10!
