Cookout For Good Hope Poem by Luke Easter

Cookout For Good Hope

The clouds are moving way faster than any man,
Trees sway in the wind as I think, “yes you can, ”
Bees pollinate flowers it is that time of the year,
Betty, Lilly and Addie stop over with good cheer.

Facing away from the crowd and staring at the sky,
Strange how when you’re having fun time flies by,
A mixture of excitement added to calmness because,
There’s an abundance to eat and drink filled with love.

Talked with both Deacon Anderson’s, Robert plus Cleve,
They are both great grandfathers, kind of hard to believe,
What’s the secret to looking so good, they’re not tellin,
“Deacon Fuqua, please step away from the watermelon.”

Head chef for the day was none other than Sister Sherry,
The games coordinator is who else but Sister Auntie Mary,
Adam, Taisia, Maya and DJ were part of the young crowd,
Dion, RJ and a host of others were younger but not too loud.

Isn’t it simply amazing how super fast these kids can grow?
Oh yeah, Marjorie (BKA) Butter showed up and not on a roll,
Of course there was a game for women only and not for men,
Maybe they didn’t want our superior knowledge barging in.

My daughter began laughing because she thinks that’s funny,
The only thing men have more of is just a little bit of money,
And as soon as women are actually paid what they are worth,
She said scientists will try & find a way for men to give birth.

Instead of church, today’s service was held in the park,
That is, until the rain came and sunshine became dark,
It lasted only a little while however we still had to leave,
My sister-in-law was locked out & my wife had the keys.

For all of the men this had to be some very good news,
I was about to be crowned the new king of horseshoes,
Now I’ll have to wait another whole year, well that’s fine,
Judging by all the smiling faces everyone had a good time.

Our gathering was on Old River Road, Chagrin Reservation,
With so many colored folk it almost looked like a plantation,
Next week we’ll be back in the old homestead at Good Hope,
Bradford takes us out once a year, he’s the Pastor not the Pope.
