Conversation With My Gyaenacologist Poem by Manjula Reddy

Conversation With My Gyaenacologist

CONVERSATION with my gynaecologist Dr. Divya Sudarshan - Happy Women Clinic, Secunderabad.

Dear Dr. Divya,
A little something for you.  Hope you enjoy it.

EMPOWER ME

Clinic neat, no footwear allowed
Patients sit comfortably, despite a crowd

Books organized well, according to their content
To keep her patients busy and well informed is her intent

A patient feels empowered just skimming through the books
Then upon having had a fill of them, one tends to look at the nooks

On the notice board are posted little poems with messages loud and clear
Some funny, some quite harsh, yet dear

They do bring a smile to one's tired face
And keep you well occupied while for your turn you patiently wait

You are swiftly called in and asked to speak about your medical ailment
It's all very well as she examines you and listents to you endlessly lament

She writes the prescription with great speed and expertise
Then quickly explains what your month's regimen will be, should you please

The patient nods as though it's all understood
Then says thankyou and steps out politely like goody two shoes

A gaze at the prescription maybe half an hour later
Leaves the patient bewildered and wishing she were a doctor!

The scribble, the scrawl, the illegible instruction
Puts the ailing patient through quite a bit of frustration

Buffer wiped clean the patient tries hard to recollect what was verbally said
Pretty much in vain she scratches her blank head

She wonders, should I call the very busy Dr. D.?
Probably not coz she might next write a funny about me!

Finally pulling herself together she manages to understand
Heaves a sigh of relief, and quickly jots down what she can in her own hand

Why do doctors have such terrible handwriting?
A question eternal, there's no denying

Dr. V. P.  has done something exceedingly clever
She's begun to perscribe using her pc and printer

This greatly empowers the ailing patient
Since the prescription is for her and not the medical salesman

It's good to read up on your medication before you purchase it
Understand your treatment, just google your bit

So dear Dr. D., with all due respect
Your handwriting is terrible, its nowhere near perfect

Please write a prescription that's legible to all
At strange hours you will no longer receive annoying calls!

dear manjula,

the compliments came pouring, .. wonderful and warm...
and i almost believed my doctorly charm..

and then came the stuff about nodding away..
and not understanding a word i would say!

dear god! .. is this how  every patient thinks? ?
if so, ..that means my treatment stinks!

if i can`t make the patient understand the aim..
then what information given can i claim? ?

and then the little lament on my prescription too
but here is a little secret for you!

in college the rule, though it may shock..
is, ..the worse the handwriting..the better the doc!

so we all tried messing our prescriptions in the hope
that the illegibility would give us some scope! !

jokes apart, .. i think you haven`t come this year..
cos i have a printer too, ..! ! my dear..

i thought i needed it.. to keep me sane..
and definitely now, the calls are in vain...

who is this dr V P you speak of? ? .. do i know? ? ..
even if not, .. about my printer i can crow..

but next time when you come.. please take your time..
taking medicines without knowing why, .seems like a crime!

and thanks again! , for the poem, .charmed, .i am indeed
cos people who can write witty and sharp are a dying breed!

affectionately

Dr Divya T Sudarshan

Dr. D., Dr. D., what can I say
I'm bowled over by your warm reply today

Your treatment doesn't stink dear Dr. D
One of the best gynaecs in town you will continue to be

I did meet you two weeks ago
You probably thought I was such a bore

Whining about my new found ovarian cyst
My thoughts all a hazy mist

I did feel much better after talking to you
About the treatment I now have a clue

The elusive Dr. V. P., is a buddy I assume
Vani Patalay, for error leaves no room

Its heartenting to see the same doctors over the years
In this growing city of migrants and strangers

I will continue to come to you for treatment surely
Although I just hate the thought of another surgery

So I do hope the medication you prescribed works well on me
For I want to be a woman both happy and free!

dear manjula, ..

ah! so you are that manjula! .. of the cyst and hyst fame...
pardon me.. as it`s a common name...

as for the treatment, .. i wish thee well..
just do your thing,  not on illness dwell

when you came, my comp was on the blink
and thus proves machines are more human than we think

they conk off when we need them most..
and let us down, when of them we boast..

its repaired and working..no more  pens to grope
and next time a typed  prescription or you[ i hope! ]

 affectionately
Dr Divya
