Compatibility Poem by David Abrahams

Suiting for a year or more -
We dragged our suitcases along
Behind us.
Resting on our luggage
In the Maui sun.
Acting nonchalant while
Perched atop our duffles
In the open air of Aloha Market.

But when you came at last
Two blocks behind Walmart Mall
To love and live in Leesville –
Our baggage spilled open on the floor.
Like the cockroaches we inherited
From the dead mother of our landlord
The dirty laundry scurried to the periphery
Of tears and racing hearts when we shined a light
Too brightly upon it.

Over time they’ve returnd
A mutual pile of regrets and proud moments
Not afraid to stare back into the light
We flip on from time to time -
while searching for just the right suit
in the walk-in we share
where our skeletons dance together nicely.
