Close the windows

Someone once said
the eyes
are the windows
on the soul.

Look into mine.

What do you see
in the skull of a poor
atheist?

Is there anything there?

I have the iris, cornea,
retina et cetera. I have the bloodshot
whites of the wine lover. No temperance
here.
I have faith, all right.
It is a faith in my fellows,
faith in Right,
faith in doing good,
if I can.
How many evangelistic
Prime
Ministers,
or Presidents
can say that, hand on heart
?

Is my house empty?
It feels full of Good,
not Bad.
But I know hypocrisy,
soul-houses replete with
windows. I have
furniture in my
rooms. They have,
in reality.
rooms of bare floorboards
with splinters.
Be careful where you walk.
