Candle Poem by Anna Osipova

Candle

The candle is tired. The fire dyed out.
My tears are real - your smiles were fake.
You wanted so much for us to be coupled,
I wanted for us to break.

The fire dyed out. The smoke is gone.
Your words are just whispers now.
You wanted so much this fire to burn,
I wanted for it to die down.

The smoke is gone. The candle is tired.
Your letters are ashes in tray.
You wanted for me to be by your side.
I didn't… and I went away.

In the absence of mutual love and trust no relationship can sustain. Now there seems to be no chance of a rapprochement. It would be better to part ways in the given situation. Nicely depicted. Thanks. The candle is tired. The fire dyed out. Your letters are ashes in tray.

The speaker seems very self possesed. She is clear in her mind this is not the passion to surrender to. It's sad to witness the man's hope and then his disappointment but she must break away or both of them will suffer. This if the dark side of Romantic Love - someone is always broken by unrequited love. It cannot be otherwise. But I have no doubt this speaker is not cruel; but she must be firm or he will continue to hope against hope. Don't all of us know this heartbreak? Yeats closed a poem of break-up with the line OTHER LOVES AWAIT US. It's a mix of sadness and hope.
