Callous Poem by Jason Caporaletti

Callous

Such strong facades does he put up
that his own heart’s confused.
Destined for suspicion
when he meets anyone other.
For he knows how to act
and how his acting he’s abused.
“So do we all” he thinks,
so all faces are just cover.

Through time he has forgotten
there’s a true meaning of “friend”
beyond exchanging favors
for each one’s own selfish goal.
Won’t entertain the notion,
disbelief he won’t suspend,
perhaps not every smile’s
made to hide a tainted soul.

He takes pride in discoveries
of deeper dark intent.
He’ll disassemble motives
‘til there’s something to unveil.
When what he sees is simple
he is never quite content.
He turns each little rain drop
into icy stormy hail.

On edge, he has advantage
over those who would betray,
but he will never learn such things
as unconditional love.
A life so over-guarded,
but he knows no other way.
May his callous heart be pierced
by Heaven’s light above.
