Brexit - A Candle In The Wind! Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

Brexit - A Candle In The Wind!

One world, many hearts
one hope, many faces
where will they not go
for friendship, fraternity and fortune?
why would they lose their free movement?
why would they lose their opportunities?
why would they not co-exist
after living as neighbors, as friends
for over centuries?

To work, to eat and survive anywhere
- an universal right of every human being,
inter-dependency a human necessity
just as the baker needs a tailor
just as the same tailor needs his baker,
people need support
support needs people
just as mornings look for sunlight
sunlight looks for morning.

Refugees kept flocking
from across the borders for survival
without restrictions
without any passport or baggage
as barriers got opened
as shores, ports and airports
brought people to safety
from a war-torn country
believing that strength in unity
and togetherness in understanding
promotes care and endurance.

People have lived and survived
on this planet without extinction
without unfairness
of benefits and liberties
and by sharing prosperity and providence
generations have passed on its existence.

So how could a country ever
choose to separate itself from others
when economically, socially
they have vibed and existed
with mutual respect and accessibility
to one another?
how could borders now be restricted
when walls have been broken down
and countries re-united
to live in peace and harmony?

How could ties ever be separated
when the world is one huge place
and the mother-earth is just one nest
holding viability, feasibility
and dependency as essentials
to everyone who ventures
from any direction to build a future
for himself and his family?

Can a country ever choose
to be so decisive
or hold humanity to a ransom
when those many faces,
those many hearts
are held together
by one word called Freedom:
freedom to live and work
freedom to share and care
freedom to love and survive
freedom to walk anywhere on this earth
without classifications or diversions.
