Breakfast Poem by Maya Hanson

Breakfast

I think
if I gave you the book of me
you would treat me differently
you wouldn't do a lot of the things you do now
like talk at me over breakfast
about the girl I should ask about but don't want to know

Shut the doors as an afterthought
without even thinking
how dark you'll make this room,
I don't have night vision yet

Give me the world in the palm of your hand
but you give everyone the world,
you can make so many worlds fit in a smile or a teardrop
This is your universe after all
I realize over breakfast
isn't that just the hardest pain to grasp?
