Belief Poem by Khaoula Basty

Belief

Rating: 3.9

Believe that the world is in peace
Believe that all humans live in peace
God has sent down peace
Why is the world a tragedy?
Why are all humans fighting each other?
Why do we die hurting, torturing and killing
OURSELVES BY OURSELVES?
Why is there no humanity?
Why is there no love?
Why is there no sincerity?
Why is there no peace?
Why is there no charity?
Why do we destroy Humanity?
Why?
Come together people
Let us unify
Let us live in peace
Let us protect our nature
Let us plant roses instead of bombs
Let us water earth with water instead of blood
Let us release doves instead of firing
Let us love each other
IN THE NAME OF HUMANITY
And don't hate each other in the name of war

One of traits of great poems is that they ask more questions than what they answer.. Your poem, written in the aftermath of terrible incidents taking place around the world, is a very powerful poem as it asks simple questions that are really tough to answer and yet we all know what those answers are supposed to be. The imagery of planting a bomb on earth is rich in the sense that it can convey - a) The act of bombs detonating on the surface of earth, and b) The hatred that such acts often result from as well as plants on the society. The proposal of watering the earth instead of having it soaked in blood is strong, as it suggests how much blood has been shed in the name of war and terror, and war on terror! The symbol of peace dove, you ask, should be 'released' - it is already trapped in a cage, we must love all HUMANITY and not just ourselves as individuals, not merely our country or culture, but all countries and culture - the voice and nature of humanity is universal.. Peace Khaolua, thank you for your wonderful piece.

I love understanding that you write your poetry to be spoken aloud. It adds so much to the words. The use of repetition (Let us, Why, and Believe) helps to create meaning and rhythm to your work. You open your poem with a positive expression that we should believe that peace is possible within humans and also in our world. Then you move on to the dissonance: if peace is possible, then WHY, WHY, WHY...are we destroying each other and our peace? After that impassioned speech, the speaker moves back to a hopeful stance when she says, let us unify....let us plant roses instead of bombs. The last two lines pull the poem together. In all caps, the speaker IMPLORES the reader to act: Let us love each other / IN THE NAME OF HUMANITY/ And don't hate each other in the name of war (said much more quietly...in my perspective) . Nicely woven spoken poem with a layered, yet overall positive message. Thanks for sharing your heart. Peace.
